Historical BackgroundOrigin:
In 1904, President Theodore Roosevelt launched the American coinage revival movement, planning to redesign all circulating coins. In 1908, considering that 1909 was the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth and that the public hoped for Lincoln-themed coins, Roosevelt decided to replace the Indian Head Cent with a design commemorating Lincoln. Design and Issuance: In late 1908, Roosevelt met the Lithuanian sculptor Victor David Brenner, who had carved a Lincoln Memorial plaque. Admiring Brenner's work, Roosevelt invited him to design the new Lincoln Cent. Since Brenner was designing coins for the first time, he had conflicts with Charles Barber, the chief engraver of the United States Mint, resulting in the coin being redesigned several times within seven months. Finally, it was approved by Secretary of the Treasury Franklin MacVeagh in July 1909 and issued on August 2nd.
Design of Appearance: The obverse features the portrait of President Abraham Lincoln of the United States, and the reverse pattern shows an ear of grain encircling the words "ONE CENT". Therefore, it is also known as the "Wheat Cent" or "Wheat Ear Cent".
In 1943, due to the shortage of copper resources during World War II, the United States Mint produced a large number of steel 1 - cent coins. However, a very small number of copper coins still made their way into circulation, making them extremely rare. In rare cases, a 1943 copper Lincoln Wheat Cent can sell for one million dollars. Under normal circumstances, its value is approximately between $100,000 and $250,000.
Cultural Significance: It was the first U.S. coin to feature the image of a president and the first regularly issued coin to depict a real person, thus holding significant cultural and historical importance.
Symbolic Significance:The portrait of Lincoln on the coin represents a great president in American history. He led the American Civil War, preserved national unity, and abolished slavery. The wheat pattern on the reverse symbolizes American agriculture and harvest, reflecting the history and cultural heritage of the United States as a major agricultural country.
Collectible Significance: The Lincoln Wheat Cent is an important variety in American coin collecting. Many collectors consider it a key item in their collections. Due to its long issuance time span, there are differences in the quantity and preservation conditions of coins from different years and versions, so it also has certain investment value.
